Speech Processing for Swiss German – Expert Group Meeting

The expert meeting on Speech Processing for Swiss German took place on the 9th of November 2021.

The meeting was opened with a greeting and a short intro to the topic held by Prof. Dr. Mark Cieliebak. However, this time the focus of the meeting was on exchanging of ideas and experiences. That is why the course of the meeting changed shortly to a lively discussion.

About 20 experts with different backgrounds were able to join the discussion. Among them Speech-to-Text solutions providers, practitioners in search of solution as well as people generally intrested in the topic. They were able to discuss diverse challenges, use cases and data availability of Speech Processing for Swiss German. One of the biggest challenges for such under-resoursed languages is the data availability and data quality. One of the biggest current campaigns to gather such data is “Swiss Dialect Collection” also conducted by SwissNLP.

The expert meeting showed that there is a lot of interest but also many challenges on the road to building robust applications based on Speech Processing for Swiss German.
